The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gomphonema is Gomphonema acuminatum Ehrenberg.

Type locality: Robert Tarn, Tarn shelf, Mt Field National Park, Tasmania; (Kociolek & al. 2004: 438, 428) Holotype: Fig. 81 (epitype) J.P. Bradbury; February 1985; Elevation 1220 m, shallow glacial scour basin, gelatinous material on vertical rock surface about 25 cm deep; CAS; Slide 221036 (Kociolek & al. 2004: 438, 428) Notes: CAS Accession 621812 (California Academy of Sciences).

General Environment
This is a freshwater species.

Description
Valves clavate, angular in appearance with broadly rounded poles. Length 20-38 µm. Breadth 4-5 µm. Raphe slightly undulate. Axial area narrow at poles, widening towards centre. Central area oval in shape, without stigmata. Striae radiate, 10-12 in 10 µm. Apical pore field distinct at the footpole.
