Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Brachytheca is Brachytheca sulcata A.A.Gontcharov & M.Watanabe.

Type Information
Holotype locality: "Lake Monowai, South Island, New Zealand"; (Fumanti & Alfinito 2004: 455) Holotype: B. Fumanti; March 1990; In littoral plankton and sediments; RO; (Fumanti & Alfinito 2004: 455) Notes: The water sample containing the type material is deposited in the Herbarium of the University of Rome 'La Sapienza', Italy (RO).

General Environment
This is a freshwater species.

Description
Cells solitary, short cylindrical (L/W 0.85-1.10) with slightly concave sides, circular in apical view, 18-20 µm long and 18-19 µm wide. Sinus lacking, suture in a more or less median position. Angles slightly rounded, apex almost straight. Cell wall smooth, only slightly rugose along the apical margins and subapically, with 3 circular rows of pores in quincunx in subapical position and one other row of pores above the seam in each semicell. Apices with concentric rows of pores in quincunx along the margins and other scattered pores towards the centre.
