The type species (holotype) of the genus Gyrosigma is Gyrosigma hippocampus Hassall.

Description
Valves linear, gently tapering to obtuse apices, making the valve outline slightly sigmoid. Raphe central, sigmoid. Length 75-110 mm, breadth 9-12 mm. Central bars smooth and of equal length. The primary side of the central raphe sternum is continuous with the central bar on that side; there is no hyaline area adjacent to the central bars. The external central raphe fissures are curved in opposite directions, as are the apical endings. Internal central raphe endings rounded. At the apices there is a row of pores, above the helictoglossa; this row is continuous with the marginal row of valve areolae. There is a hyaline area adjacent to the terminal raphe fissure. Longitudinal striae 24-30 in 10 mm, transverse striae 19-24 in 10 mm.
