Description
This variety differs from the type variety by having a semicell with a broader polar lobe, open sinus and broadly rounded basal lobes. In side view, the semicell is narrowly subpyramidal with two protuberances on each side. Cell length 71-73 µm, width 26-30 µm, breadth of isthmus 10-11 µm, thickness approximately 22 µm. The cells are medium in size, approximately 2.4 times longer than they are broad, deeply constricted in the middle, and the sinus is open outwardly but is acute at the extremity. Semicells are similar to the type in respect to the polar lobe, but with slightly sub-parallel margins, the apex has a circle of intramarginal granules, and the basal lobes are very rounded. The semicell face has two protuberances, one above the other; in side view, the semicells are narrowly semi-elliptical with two protrusions at each side of the lateral margins. Chloroplasts have two pyrenoids in each semicell.
