This is the type species (lectotype) of the genus Caulacanthus.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type information
Lectotype locality: Cádiz, Spain (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 282). Type: Clemente; BM-K (Athanasiadis 1996: 60). Notes: This type locality was first recorded by Searles (1968: 46, pl. 10a) who selected Cádiz as the type locality. Turner reported seeing specimens from Clemente (Cádiz) and the Mediterranean (Dr Mohr)

Introduced into several localities in California (Sonoma, Marin and Mendicino Counties and San Francisco Bay; see Gabrielson, Widdowson & Lindstrom 2004: 118, footnote). - (18 Aug 2006) - Wendy Guiry

Rio & Cabioch (1988) report this species as an introduction to the north-west coast of France and Guiry (1997) reported plants from south-western Britian that require confirmation with fertile material. - (18 Aug 2006) - Wendy Guiry
