Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Durinskia agilis (Kofoid & Swezy) Saburova, Chomérat & Hoppenrath.

Type locality: Pacific off La Jolla, California; (Index Nominum Algarum) Type: July, August; (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: Epiphyte (see Durinskia agilis).
