The type species (holotype) of the genus Ulva is Ulva lactuca Linnaeus.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Prasiola fluviatilis (Sommerfelt) Areschoug ex Lagerstedt.

Description
"laetevirens nitida plana cuneato-lanceolata obtusa basi attenuata in radicem tenuissemum scutulatum, margine crispo erosoque, seminibus qvaternatis se. per lineas geminas abruptas parallelas disposits, quare ab U. plantanigea L., cui alias forma subsimilis, distinguitur." [light green, shining, flat, cuneate-lanceolate, obtuse, tapering at the base, with a very thin scutulate root, with a curly margin, and eros with four-sided seeds. arranged through a pair of abrupt parallel lines, and therefore it is distinguished from U. plantanigea L., to which it is otherwise similar in form]
