The type species (holotype) of the genus Lyngbya is Lyngbya confervoides C.Agardh ex Gomont.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Oscillatoria miniata Hauck ex Gomont.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), saturn-red, flame-scarlet; literally, ‘painted with red lead’ (Stearn 1973).
