The type species (lectotype) of the genus Cymbella is Cymbella cymbiformis C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Encyonema ventricosum var. hankensis (Skvortzov) Rodionova & Pomazkina.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective A (Latin), swollen, especially on one side (Stearn 1973).
