Adjective (Latin), simple, undivided, unbranched, of one piece or series, not consisting of several distinct parts (Stearn 1973).

Hay (1979) writes: "Durvillea simplex Suhr, 1836: Tab. 3, Fig. 22: Kützing (1849, p. 576) called this plant Laminaria simplex (Suhr) Kütz., and De Toni (1895, p. 222) also believed it to be a species of Laminaria. The holdfast has long haptera and is distinctly laminarian. There is no stipe, the long strap-like blade arising directly from the holdfast. As Spitzbergen is thousands of kilometers outside the range of drifting Durvillaea antarctica, D. simplex is clearly a misidentification." - (21 Apr 2012) - M.D. Guiry
