Origin of species name
Participle A (Latin), acuminate, i.e. tapering gradually or abruptly from inwardly curved sides into a narrow point (Stearn 1973).

This taxon designed by R.D. Wood in 1962 includes four of Allen's species, Nitella subspicata (monoecious) and the dioecious species N. missouriensis, N. occidentalis and N. blankinshipii. The dioeciouis species have been renamed to Nitella blakinshipii and Nitella blankinshipii var. missouriensis and var. occidentalas. This taxon has no modern accepted name. - (27 Mar 2010) -
