Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Diatoma is Diatoma vulgaris Bory.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Fragilariforma fossilis (Pantocsek) H.Tanaka.

Type locality: "Sentenai in insula Jesso, Japan" [Setana, Hokkaido?]; (Pantocsek 1892: pl. 8, fig. 141) Neotype (designated by Tanaka 2014: 17): Micropaleontology Collection, National Museum of Nature and Science, Japan; MPC-25065 (Tanaka 2014: 17) Notes: "As the slides and materials were lost during World War D , l designated the neotype specimen slide using material from the type locality, Setana, the same as Sentenai in Pantocsek (1905)."
