The type species (holotype) of the genus Gloionema is Gloionema paradoxum C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Navicula apiculata (Greville) A.Cleve.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), ending abruptly in a sharp point or apiculum (Stearn 1973).
