The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fragilaria is Fragilaria pectinalis (O.F.Müller) Lyngbye.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Hannaea inaequidentata (Lagerstedt) Genkal & Kharitonov.

Noun (Latin), arc, bow or curve; arch (Stearn 1973).
