The type species (lectotype) of the genus Achnanthes is Achnanthes adnata Bory.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Psammothidium atalanta (J.R.Carter) Bukhtiyarova.

Type locality: "In aquis dulcibus insulae Tristan da Cuhna dictae..."; (Carter 1966: 444) Syntype: BM; 77591-2 (Williams & Reid 2002: 137) Notes: "In aquis dulcibus insulae Tristan da Cuhna dictae … Sample No. 6. Crater Lake, on moss, 6500 feet above sea level.’ [BM 77591] "Sample No. 7. As number 6 but on algae.’ [BM 77592]."
