The type species (lectotype) of the genus Trachelomonas is Trachelomonas volvocina (Ehrenberg) Ehrenberg.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Strombomonas verrucosa var. elongata (Skvortzov) Deflandre.

Adjective (Latin), elongated (Stearn 1973).
