Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Mesophyllum is Mesophyllum lichenoides (J.Ellis) Me.Lemoine.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Orthocarpa haptericola (Foslie) Athanasiadis & D.L.Ballantine.

Type locality: "Algen er funden paa haptere: af Ecklonia i Island Bay naerheden af Wellington, Ny Seland (Setehell, nr. 6351).: [near Wellington, Island Bay, North Island, New Zealand]; (Foslie 1906: 8) Holotype: W.A. Setchell (No. 6351); vi 1904; on holdfasts of Ecklonia [radiata?]; TRH; B17-2549 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 341) Notes: Additional data in Woelkerling (1993: 114), who mistakenly gives the type locality as the ‘Bay of Islands’. "Syntype: In UC (745591, Setchell no. 6351, includes two slides, North Island, Island Bay, near Wellington, New Zealand; Figures 75, 76)" (Athanasiadis & Ballantine 2024: 179).
