Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Phaeostroma is Phaeostroma pustulosum Kuckuck.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chukchia endophytica (S.Lund) R.T.Wilce, P.M.Pedersen & S.Sekida.

Type Information
Type locality: Scoresby Sund and Kejser Franz Joseph regions of east Greenland; (Gil-Rodríguez & al. 2009: 277) Type: Lund; 27 June-28 August 1933; dredged "between 5-25 m"; C; 10 numbered microscope slides (Gil-Rodríguez & al. 2009: 277) Notes: According to R.T. Wilce, it is likely that the S. latissima specimens with accompanying C. endophytica collected by Lund at 25 m were unattached and components of the often-large "loose-lying" Arctic sublittoral algal populations.
