The type species (lectotype) of the genus Chlorella is Chlorella vulgaris Beijerinck.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Mychonastes homosphaera (Skuja) Kalina & Puncochárová.

Type Information
Type locality: "Locality of type strain not known. In small pools of polluted water near Prague, causing gree discoloration of water."; (Fott & Nováková 1969: 50) Notes: "no. 87 in the Paris Coll. (type culture)."
