Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pterothamnion crispum (Ducluzeau) Nägeli
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), resembling fir trees (Neal 1993).
No synonyms are currently included in AlgaeBase.
Athanasiadis (1996: 69) proposes the combination Pterothamnion abietinum (Reinsch) Athanasiadis but included both the basionym and the proposed new combination in synonymy with Pterothamnion crispum. This is contrary to Art. 34.1 of the ICBN and the combination is thus invalid.
This is a marine species.
Type locality: "in Dictyota. Tergeste mare adriaticum, mare mediterraneum." [Trieste, Italy] (Reinsch 1875: 48). Notes: Attanasiadis (1996: 69) notes that a type has not been designated.
