The type species (holotype) of the genus Scytosiphon is Scytosiphon filum var. lomentarius (Lyngbye) C.Agardh.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Eponomy
Named for Maxwell Stanford Doty (1916-1996), American phycologist, ecologist and aquaculturalist.
