The type species (lectotype) of the genus Phormidium is Phormidium lucidum Kützing ex Gomont.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Phormidesmis mollis (Gomont) Turicchia, Ventura, Komárková & Komárek.

Adjective (Latin), soft, pliant (Stearn 1973).
