Cool-temperate through tropical western Atlantic including the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea (Stuerck & Freshwater 2010). - (28 Apr 2011) - Wendy Guiry

Delnatte & Wynne (2016) note: "According to Stuerke & Freshwater (2008) collections in the Western Atlantic going under the name Polysiphonia denudata do not correspond to that European-based species. In a later paper, Stuercke & Freshwater (2010) described the new species P. schneideri (with a type locality of Wrightsville Beach, New Hanover County, North Carolina, USA) for material that had been previously mis-identified as P. denudata (Rodríguez-Prieto et al. 1999)." - (20 Oct 2016) - M.D. Guiry
