The type species (lectotype) of the genus Halymenia is Halymenia floresii (Clemente) C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Galene rotunda (Okamura) D'Archino & Zuccarello.

Adjective (Latin), almost circular, with length breadth ratio of about 6 to 5 (Stearn 1973).
