This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pterothamnion tepocense (E.Y.Dawson) Athanasiadis & Kraft.

Type locality: Tepoca Bay, Sonora, Mexico; (Dawson 1962: 8) Holotype: 4 February 1940; 22 metres depth, sandy bottom with abundant worm-tubes, etc; Herb. Allan Hancock Foundation; 54 (Dawson 379-40) (Dawson 1962: 8)
