The type species (holotype) of the genus Sargassum is Sargassum bacciferum (Turner) C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sargassum vigorosum P.C.Silva.

Lectotype locality: Swan River, Western Australia; (Silva & al. 1996: 706) Notes: Silva et al. (1996) recommend consulting Millar & Kraft (1994a: 30) for more information on the lectotype locality of this species.
