The type species (lectotype) of the genus Caulerpa is Caulerpa prolifera (Forsskål) J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Caulerpa geminata Harvey.

Type locality: Rottnest Island, Western Australia; (Silva & al. 1996: 841) Lectotype (fide Coppejans et al., 1998: 131): W.H. Harvey 214; TCD; (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: According to Womersley (1984: 268) the type was collected from Kent I., Bass Strait, by R. Brown and is located in BM.
