The type species (lectotype) of the genus Chaetoceros is Chaetoceros tetrachaeta Ehrenberg.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chaetoceros ornatus (Chamnansinp, Moestrup & Lundholm) X.J.Xu, Yang Li & Lundholm.

Adjective (Latin), contorted, literally, ‘powerful, vehement, involved’. (Stearn 1973).
