The type species (holotype) of the genus Sargassum is Sargassum bacciferum (Turner) C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sargassum lui M.J.Wynne.

Type locality: Guangxi Province, China; (Tseng & Baoren 1995: 91) Type: Growing on lower intertidal rocks; QD; (Tseng & Baoren 1995: 91) Notes: Guangxi Province: Weizhou Island in April (AST 55- 1973), and Fangcheng in May (AST 55-2113)
