The type species (holotype) of the genus Chaetangium is Chaetangium ornatum (Linnaeus) Kützing.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gracilaria pulvinata Skottsberg.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), fastigiate, with branches clustered, parallel and erect, giving a narrow elongated habit (occasionally meaning branched reaching to the same height) (Stearn 1973).
