The type species (holotype) of the genus Rhodymenia is Rhodymenia palmetta (Stackhouse) Greville.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sparlingia pertusa (Postels & Ruprecht) G.W.Saunders, I.M.Strachan & Kraft.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), stipitate, provided with a stalk or a little stipe (Stearn 1973).
