The type species (holotype) of the genus Sargassum is Sargassum bacciferum (Turner) C.Agardh.

Type information
Type locality: "Am Cap der guten Hoffnung" (between Omsamculo (Umzimkulu) and Omcomas (Umkomaas) rivers, Natal, South Africa (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 670). Type: Drege; (Silva 1996-to date Notes: Silva et al. (1996) recommend consulting Drège (1843: 157) for more information on the type locality of this species.
