The type species (lectotype) of the genus Callithamnion is Callithamnion corymbosum (Smith) Lyngbye.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pleonosporium borreri (Smith) Nägeli.

Type locality: Pornic; (Dixon & Price 1981: 131) Holotype: LD; herb. alg. Agardh 18514 (Dixon & Price 1981: 131) Notes: As suggested by J. Agardh (1851: 53), the type material represents Pleonosporium borreri (Dixon & Price, 1981: 131).

Adjective (Latin), harsh (Newton 1931).
