The type species (holotype) of the genus Zygnema is Zygnema cruciatum (Vaucher) C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Spirogyra mirabilis (Hassall) Kützing.

Adjective (Latin), to be wondered at, wonderful, marvellous, extraordinary, admirable (Smith & Lockwood 1933).
