Type locality: "George Town, Gunn" [Georgetown, Tasmania]; (Hooker & Harvey 1847: 402) Lectotype (designated by Reedman & Womersley 1976: 84): R. Gunn; BM; (Reedman & Womersley 1976: 84) Notes: A cystocarpic plant in BM selected as lectotype. Syntypes in BM and TCD.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective B (Latin), neighbouring, allied to, akin to (Stearn 1973).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
Generally found in shallow water on reefs on rough-water coasts, rarely epiphytic on Posidonia or robust algae ( Reedman & Womersley 1976: 84). Usually occurs commonly on the surface or in pools on rough-water rock platforms at low tide level, occasionally in deeper water or in relatively calm-water situations (Womersley 1996: 127).
