Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Laminaria is Laminaria digitata (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Ecklonia radiata (C.Agardh) J.Agardh.

Type Information
Type locality: "New Holland"; (Womersley 1987: 332) Holotype: John Hunter; LIV; (Womersley 1987: 332) Notes: According to Millar & Kraft (1994: 2, 25) "Illustrated by Dawson Turner (1809) as Fucus radiatus, the specimens were sent to him by Colonel Thomas Velley, who had in turn received them from the second Governor of New South Wales, John Hunter. Hunter, who held office from 1795 to 1800 and keenly collected around Port Jackson, Botany Bay and Broken Bay, also sent specimens of Conferva umbilicata [= Microdictyon umbilicatum (Velley) Zanardini] to England from Port Jackson (Turner 1809: 161; Millar and Kraft 1993)."
