The type species (holotype) of the genus Synechococcus is Synechococcus elongatus (Nägeli) Nägeli.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Thermosynechococcus vulcanus (J.J.Copeland) H.Katoh, S.Itoh, J.-R.Shen & M.Ikeuchi.

Type locality: Yellowstone: Imperial Geyser Crater, Twin Buttes Region ; (Copeland 1936: 61) Type: no. 324: on bottom of creek at 71°C and pH 8.8; (Copeland 1936: 61) Notes: Figura typica: figura 6e; neotype (designated by Komárek et al., 2020: 174): CBFS A-092-1, dried material of strain"Thermostichus vulcanus-Rupite" (RUP-VU-1), deposited in herb. coll., Univ. South Bohemia.
