Type Information
Type locality: Vodice, Croatia; (Wynne & Furnari 2014: 517) Notes: Holotype: a slide preparation in C (CAT 2479 in the list of type specimens). Made for a culture isolated by Ruth Nielsen from a specimen collected at Vodice, Croatia (43°45'N, 15°47'E); found on a dead mollusk shell in the littoral, 27 May 1978. Additional illustrations in Nielsen (1988a, Figs 117, as Stromatella monostromatica), in Nielsen (1988b, Figs 22ah, as Stromatella monostromatica), and in Dangeard (1965a: pl. I, Figs 813; pl. III, Fig. 1, as Stromatella monostromatica).

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), with a single layer (Stearn 1973).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Description
Thallus epiphytic, monostromatic crusts, interior of thallus consisting of compact angular cells, 8-12 µm long and 6-8 µm in width; thallus pseudoparenchymatous in central region and irregularly filamentous toward periphery; filaments percurrent, laterally branched, made up of elongate cells, 6-15 µm long and 4-5 µm in width; cells with a single chloroplast with a single pyrenoid. Cells forming globular sporangia, with a diameter of 8-12 µm, usually forming 8 zoospores, but rarely 4 zoospores are formed or as many as 1216 zoospores per sporangium. Release of zoospores takes place in a round hole in the sporangial wall. Thalli grow on mollusk shells and on seagrasses. It differs from related taxa mainly in its monostromatic thallus, in its bicellular germlings and young plants with a bilateral symmetry.

Growing on different kinds of substrata (stones, mollusc shells, seaweeds and seagrasses).
