The type species (lectotype) of the genus Halymenia is Halymenia floresii (Clemente) C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gelinaria ulvoidea Sonder.

Type locality: Western Australia; (Silva & al. 1996: 193) Type: Preiss; HGB, MEL; 668412 (MEL) (Womersley & Lewis 1994: 208) Notes: Womersley & Lewis (1994: 208) note that HGB holds a Preiss specimen, and in MEL (668412) there are two pieces on mica, one 5 cm long, plus Sonder's notes and drawing of the larger specimen in HBG.
