Type locality: "In mari Canadensi" (uncertain) (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 324). Notes: This type locality was first recorded by Kraft & Wynne (1979: 327-328)

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), subulate, awl-shaped, i.e., tapering from a narrow or moderately broad base to a very fine point (Stearn 1973).

Distributional notes
This species was introduced accidentally, probably via oysters from Japan, into the Mediterranean (Verlaque et al. 2015: 231), being first found in the Etang de Thau (France) in 1984. Mediterranean populations should be assessed using DNA sequencing. - (5 Nov 2015) - M.D. Guiry
