The type species (lectotype) of the genus Micrasterias is Micrasterias furcata C.Agardh ex Ralfs.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Micrasterias excavata (Nordstedt) C.E.M.Bicudo & L.Sormus.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), truncate, i.e., ending very abruptly as if cut straight across (Stearn 1973).
