This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pyropia thulaea (Munda & P.M.Pedersen) Neefus .

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), of Thule, an island in the extreme north of Europe, said by some to be Iceland (Lewis & Short 1890).
