The type species (holotype) of the genus Rhodymenia is Rhodymenia palmetta (Stackhouse) Greville.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gracilaria occidentalis (Børgesen) M.Bodard.

Type locality: St. Jan: in sound between St. Jan and St. Thomas; (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: syntype localities:St. John and St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, Caribbean Sea, western Atlantic Ocean.
