The type species (holotype) of the genus Phymatolithon is Phymatolithon polymorphum Foslie.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Phymatolithopsis repanda (Foslie) S.Y.Jeong, Maneveldt, P.W.Gabrielson, W.A.Nelson & T.O.Cho.

Type locality: Half Moon Bay, Port Phillip Bay, Victoria; (Wilks & Woelkerling 1994: 191) Lectotype: J. Gabriel; 14 January 1899; no habitat data on type; TRH; C18-3354 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 471) Notes: Designated by Adey in Adey & Lebednik (1967: 83).

Adjective (Latin), with a wavy margin.

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
Occurs intertidally on rocky reefs and in tide pools and subtidally to depths of 6 m; on small loose-lying stones, large rocks, reef tops and on a glass bottle (Wilks & Woelkeling 1994: 192).
