The type species (holotype) of the genus Planothidium is Planothidium lanceolatum (Brébisson ex Kützing) Lange-Bertalot.

Type locality: "Ihner Bach Mündung (close to the village of Niedaltdorf) – mouth of a small river – a tributary of the Saar River, which is a tributary of the Moselle River (Saarland, SW Germany)." (Bąk & Lange-Bertalot 2015: 350). Holotype: FR (Bąk & Lange-Bertalot 2015: 350). Notes: "Holotype (designated here): slide no. 190 Mosel and Nfl.
