The type species (lectotype) of the genus Sphaerococcus is Sphaerococcus coronopifolius Stackhouse.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gelidium cartilagineum var. setaceum (C.Agardh) Grunow.

Adjective (Latin), cartilaginous, flexible but firm and tough (Stearn 1973).
