The type species (lectotype) of the genus Sphaerococcus is Sphaerococcus coronopifolius Stackhouse.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Delisea flaccida (Suhr) Papenfuss.

Adjective (Latin), flaccid, not able to hold up its own weight (Stearn 1973).
