The type species (lectotype) of the genus Lithophyllum is Lithophyllum incrustans Philippi.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pseudolithophyllum tasmanicum (Foslie) W.H.Adey.

Type Information
Type locality: Georgetown Heads, Tasmania, Australia; (Woelkerling 1998: 329) Lectotype: collector not indicated; date not indicated; TRH; A2-129 (Woelkerling 1998: 329) Notes: Also TRH, unnumbered, includes slides 697 and 1339; designated by Adey in Adey & Lebednik, 1967: 17. Woelkerling & Campbell (1992: 100) note: Foslie (1907a) based this entity on specimens from Georgetown Heads, Tasmania and Cape Jaffa, South Australia; the designated lectotype is epiphytic on a small brown algal fragment and contains several coralline plants; the fragments examined belong to Pneophyllum; its status as a distinct species is being assessed (Penrose, personal communication). "Most of the lectotype is in PC." (Woelkering et al. 2005: 38).
