Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Halymenia is Halymenia floresii (Clemente) C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dumontia contorta (S.G.Gmelin) Ruprecht.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), purplish, becoming purple (Stearn 1973).
