Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fucus is Fucus vesiculosus Linnaeus.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gelidium corneum (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Type locality: Algeciras (Spain); (Dixon & Irvine 1977: 140) Lectotype (provisional): Herb. Agardh, LD; 32975 (Dixon & Irvine 1977: 141)

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), horny, hard and close-textured but not brittle (Stearn 1973).
